Moscow Police Detain 40 Migrants at Victory Day Celebrations

MOSCOW, May 9 (RIA Novosti) – At least 40 migrants have been detained during Victory Day celebrations in downtown Moscow, a spokesman for the Federal Migration Service (FMS) said on Thursday.

The detentions were made by police who conducted document checks at festive events across Moscow. “If a person is in Russia legally, he or she will be released immediately,” the spokesman said.

More than 20,000 police officers and interior troops have been deployed to maintain security during the Victory Parade on Red Square and other festive events in the Russian capital.

According to the country’s Federal Migration Service, more than 3 million foreign citizens failed to abide by the Russian law and stayed in the country illegally in the first months of 2013.
