Pakistani Foreign Ministry confirms arrest of Bali bombing suspect

The Pakistani Foreign Ministry has confirmed that its security forces have arrested a man wanted in connection with the 2002 Bali bombings, Pakistani television channels reported on Thursday.

“I can confirm the arrest of an individual, who could be the Bali bombing suspect,” said Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Tehmina Janjua. “Consular access will be given to the Indonesian mission and it will be for them to determine who exactly the person is,” he added.

Pakistani media, quoting various unnamed sources, reported on Wednesday that the country’s security forces had arrested Indonesian terrorist Umar Patek several weeks ago. He is believed to have been involved in the 2002 night club bombings on Bali, which killed 202 people.

The United States has offered a $1 million reward for his capture.
