Palestinian leader Abbas expresses support of King of Bahrain

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas held a telephone conversation with King of Bahrain Hamad Bin Isa al-Khalifa discussing recent protests in Bahrain and the situation in the region, Palestinian news agency WAFA reported.

The agency said Abbas expressed his support “of the Arab uniqueness, security and stability.”

A recent wave of unrest across North Africa and the Middle East has toppled authoritarian regimes in Tunisia and Egypt and sparked civil war in Libya. Popular protests have also reached Yemen, Bahrain and Algeria.

At least seven civilians and three policemen were killed as security forces drove the protests led by the Shia majority out of the center of the capital of Bahrain, Manama, on March 16.

King Hamad Bin Isa al-Khalifa declared on March 22 a three-month state of emergency.

The protesters are calling for a constitutional monarchy, the resignation of the government and more civil rights. Some groups demand that the King step down and a republic be created.

Saudi Arabian troops entered Bahrain on March 21 to help quell the protests.
