Parliamentary conference to discuss cooperation in Baltic region

HELSINKI, August 29 (Itar-Tass) —— The Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference devoted to the theme of green growth and blue sea in the Baltic Sea Region will open here on Monday to discuss energy security, development and cooperation in the Baltic Sea Region.

“More than 200 lawmakers and statesmen from the countries in the Baltic Sea Region, regional parliaments, the ecological Helsinki Commission (HELCOM), the European Parliament and various parliamentary unions will participate in the conference,” the press service of the Finnish parliament told Itar-Tass. The conference will discuss major ecological problems in the region, the prospects for development and other topical issues for two days. The delegation of the lawmakers from the Federation Council and the State Duma, the legislative assemblies of Karelia, the Leningrad and Kaliningrad regions will represent Russia.

The Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference will be held already for the 20th time, the press service of the Finnish parliament reported. High on the agenda of the conference is a historical review of this parliamentary forum. The rapporteurs will report on the EU’s Baltic Sea Strategy and the Northern Dimension, the HELCOM Baltic Sea Action Plan, international efforts to improve the ecological situation in the Baltic Sea and the security measures in the sea. The anniversary conference will also focus on the prospects for parliamentary cooperation in the Baltic Sea Region. The parliamentary forum will also hold a presentation of Russia as a country, which will host the conference in 2012.
