Pay-out for student struck by icicle reaches €80,000

An Estonian student who was badly injured by a falling icicle in St. Petersburg is to receive further compensation.

The city’s housing committee will pay Milana Kashtanova another €10,000 euros.

In February 2010, the 22-year-old was passing by a building while workers were clearing snow and ice from the roof. The area below had not been closed off.

Milana spent several months in a coma. After coming out of it, she was unable to breathe without medical equipment.

The housing committee previously paid her more than €70,000, but this did not cover the cost of her therapy.

In November, a St. Petersburg court will consider another lawsuit submitted by Milana’s mother. She is demanding a further €60,000 euros to cover the cost of her daughter’s treatment.
