Police break up protest in Manama

Police have broken up a demonstration in Bahrain’s capital Manama.

According to reports, police units on tanks approached the protesters’ tent camp in the city’s central square and bombarded them with tear gas grenades. Two policemen died in clashes.

The basically Shia opposition supporters have been gathering in Manama’s Pearl Square for several weeks now. One of their demands is launching sweeping economic and political reforms, including an ouster of the Sunni minority.

King of Bahrain declared a state of emergency in the country for a period of three months.
