Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski visited the Libyan city of Benghazi on Wednesday to support rebels fighting troops loyal to Muammar Gaddafi, Poland’s Foreign Ministry announced on Wednesday.
“The visit is a sign of political support for the future of Libya, which involves the construction of modern democratic state and society,” a statement by the Poland’s Foreign Ministry said.
The visit was coordinated with the EU and NATO leadership, Polish media said.
Violence in Libya, which began in mid-February, has already claimed thousands of lives, with Gaddafi’s troops maintaining their combat capabilities despite NATO airstrikes against them.
