Protests and clashes erupted in a number of Syrian towns following Muslim prayers on Friday, local media reported.
Armed people opened fire on policemen in the southern city of Al-Kiswa near Damascus injuring some of them, Syria’s state television channel reported. Al Jazeera reports that a protester was killed in Al-Kiswa.
A police officer was killed in another southern city, Qadam, as protests were seen there as well, the TV channel reported.
Syrian rights organizations have estimated that some 1,300 people have been killed and more than 10,000 arrested in Syria since protests demanding the end of President Bashar al-Assad’s authoritarian rule broke out in the country in mid-March.
Foreign journalists are banned from entering the country, which makes it difficult to verify the figures.
