Quarter of Russians Prefer Watching TV to Relax

MOSCOW, April 6 (RIA Novosti) – Watching TV remains the most popular way of relaxing among Russians, with 25 percent of respondents saying they prefer siting in front of television in their spare time, according a survey by the Public Opinion Foundation (FOM) published on Friday.

A total of 15 percent of respondents devote their spare time to children, grandchildren or other family members. 11 percent said they enjoy reading, while ten percent just have a good sleep.

Among other activities that Russians prefer doing in their leisure time is going for walks (eight percent), surfing the internet or playing computer games (eight percent) and hanging out with friends (eight percent).

Seven percent said they do housework for recreation, six percent enjoy gardening and five percent opt for other outdoor activities, such as hunting, fishing and picnics. Four percent go in for sports. Only three percent visit museums, cafes and restaurants in their spare time.

The respondents were allowed to give multiple answers.

According to the survey, 54 percent of respondents have several hours of spare time every day, while 25 percent have time to rest only on weekends or holidays. A total of 16 percent said they have no leisure time at all.

The survey was conducted on March 9-10, 2013, and involved 1,500 respondents from 100 cities and towns in 43 Russian regions.
