Radiation levels increase at Japan’s Fukushima NPP after another explosion

Radiation levels in the air around the damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan have risen after another explosion hit the plant early on Tuesday, France Press reported.

An explosion occurred at the second reactor of the quake-hit nuclear power plant at around 6:10 local time (22:10 GMT Monday).

Reuters reported citing plant’s operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. that the radiation levels risen four-fold at the quake-stricken reactor. The agency adds that the fresh blast damaged the roof and the steam could be seen rising from the nuclear complex.

The previous blast hit reactor No. 3 of the Fukushima plant on Monday, injuring 11 people and further escalating concerns about possible radioactive leaks.

Fears of a large-scale nuclear disaster remain high in Japan as the country continues relief operations following a devastating earthquake and tsunami that have killed nearly 6,000 people and left thousands missing.
