Rio de Janeiro celebrated Victory in Europe Day with a fireworks display at sea and on land. Fighters also flew at treetop level and veterans rode in World War II jeeps.
Hundreds of people attended celebrations dedicated to the 66th VE-Day anniversary. The event was held in central Rio near a memorial to soldiers killed in action. Brazilian Defense Minister Nelson Jobim, the commanders of the armed services, foreign diplomats, as well as city residents and tourists, were also present.
Veterans riding in World War II jeeps stole the show, as they held the flags of the Allied nations. Brazilian soldiers paraded in the streets to the sounds of coastal guns and a naval patrol boat firing in unison.
