Rostov destroys Spartak Moscow to take Premier League lead

It’s been a night to remember for Volga Nizhny Novgorod and FC Rostov in their opening games of the Russian Premier league.

Volga 2-0 Tom

The Premier League new boys won their first-ever top flight game at home to FC Tom. Volga was a 4th division outfit only a decade ago, but they’ve shown they deserve to be among the country’s elite today.

Otar Martsvaladze and Sergey Bendz were the men writing their way into the Nizhny history books. Both goals came in the beginning of the first half, as the hosts capitalized on Tom’s defensive errors.

Rostov 4-0 Spartak Moscow

The day’s second clash saw the shock of Week 1. Spartak Moscow was absolutely walloped by Rostov.4-0 was the score way down south – a massive upset and a blow to Spartak’s title hopes.

Captain Roman Adamov claimed a brace heading home in the debut of each half. Dragan Blatnyak and Timofey Kalachev added another two goals late in the game to seal the club’s biggest victory in their elite division history.

Though Spartak was playing without a number of key players, including captain Alex, right winger Aiden McGeady and central back Marcos Rojo, it was a poor consolation for their fans.
