Russia and Libya: bilateral relations

Diplomatic relations between the USSR and Libya were established on September 4, 1955. In December 1991, Libya officially recognized the Russian Federation as the Soviet Union’s successor and over the following two decades, the two countries have been developing bilateral relations. Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has made several official visits to Moscow (1976, 1981, 1985, 2008).
