Russia loses ice hockey worlds third place to Czech Republic

The Russian national team is to leave the World Ice Hocky Championships empty handed after a 7:4 loss to the Czech Republic in the third place playoff on Sunday.

It is the first time the Russian side has failed to win any medals at the tournament since 2006, when it finished fifth.

Originally tipped to win the tournament, the Russian side was defeated by Finland in the semi-finals on Friday.

The Czechs defeated Russia the finals of last year’s competition by just one point.

This year’s final, between Finland and Sweden, begins at 10.30 pm Moscow Time (18:30 GMT) on Sunday.
