Russian Communists Call for Education Minister’s Dismissal

MOSCOW, April 9 (RIA Novosti) – The Russian Communist Party on Tuesday urged the government to admit its mistakes in the education sector and fire Education Minister Dmitry Livanov.

Party leader Gennady Zyuganov said the minister’s “destructive decisions” must be reversed.

“In less than a year he has been officially reprimanded by the Russian president, has antagonized the country’s teachers and become an object of derision among young people – schoolchildren, undergraduates and postgraduates,” Zyuganov said.

“All of that not only brings shame on the government but also demoralizes society.”

Zyuganov slammed the ministry’s education program as “antinational,” referring in particular to Livanov’s remarks that the number of students receiving state scholarships should be slashed and to his support for a plan to establish federal educational standards for high schools, which the Communist Party says could destroy the general education system in Russia.
