MOSCOW, July 8 (Itar-Tass) —— Rough manipulations with the UN Security Council resolutions on Libya have created an illusion of the possibility of foreign interference in Syria, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov told Itar-Tass on Friday.
“The Syrian situation is different from that in Libya. Since the very start of the unrest, the Syrian government expressed its readiness for constructive interaction with the protesters and took normalization efforts through political and socioeconomic transformations and a national dialog aimed to elaborate principles of the updated democratic structure of the country. We urge Damascus to accelerate the declared reforms,” he said.
“We are confident that Syrian problems must be settled in the inter-Syrian format, within the legal framework, and without violence or external interference. Attempts to make the Syrian subject ‘international’ must not create an illusion of the possibility of foreign interference in Syrian affairs under certain circumstances. Alas, the illusion was created by ‘broader interpretations’ and rough manipulations with the UN Security Council resolutions on Libya,” he said.
“Such actions in Syria would endanger the entire regional and global security architecture,” the diplomat said. “Life shows that the escalation of international pressure in the form of resolutions and sanctions has a limited effect. In the case of Syria, which is on the road of political and socioeconomic transformations, it will need international assistance instead of isolation. That is the opinion we proceed from at the UN Security Council and other international formats.”
