Russian, Kyrgyz Muftis Grapple With Islamic Issues In Bishkek

BISHKEK — The chief muftis of Kyrgyzstan and Russia met in Bishkek this week to discuss issues facing Kyrgyz migrant workers in Russia, RFE/RL’s Kyrgyz Service reports.

Kyrgyz Mufti Chubak-Hajji Jalilov and Ravil Gainutdin, chairman of the Russian Council of Muftis, talked about problems ranging from religious funerals for deceased labor migrants in Russia to bringing up children in accordance with Islamic traditions.

Also discussed was the possibility of establishing a Council of Muftis of the Commonwealth of Independent States and ways to adopt common decisions on Islamic issues in the post-Soviet space.

Gainutdin affirmed his full support for the ongoing democratic changes in Kyrgyzstan.

Gainutdin arrived in Bishkek earlier in the week to take part in the inauguration on December 1 of Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambaev.
