WASHINGTON, July 30 (Itar-Tass) —— Deputy Director General of Russia’s state nuclear concern Rosatom Vyacheslav Pershukov will travel to the United States on August 8 through 17 for meetings at the U.S. Department of Energy, several national laboratories, and universities, the press services of the U.S. Department of State and of the U.S. Department of Energy reported on Friday.
The visit will take place as part of the activity of the Russian-U.S. Nuclear Energy and Nuclear Security Working Group under the Russian-U.S. Bilateral Presidential Commission.
A source in the U.S. Department of Energy told Itar-Tass that during Pershukov’s visit they will focus on their approaches to research and development projects in the area of nuclear power engineering. Pershukov, who heads Rostaom’s research department, will hold talks with top-ranking officials from the U.S. Department of Energy and will visit a number of laboratories and universities, such as the Idaho National Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory (Illinois), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (Tennessee). Pershukov will also visit the Oregon State University, and the Texas AM University.
The visit will focus primarily on issues of the production of nuclear fuels, development of nuclear plants and handling radioactive waste, the source noted.
The Russian-U.S. Bilateral Presidential Commission was set up by an instruction of the two presidents, Dmitry Medvedev of Russia and Barack Obama of the United States, after their talks in Moscow in July 2009. The commission’s work is coordinated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Now the commission encompasses 20 working groups in various areas.
