NIZHNY NOVGOROD, Russia — Journalists from a television company in the western Russian city of Nizhny Novgorod say they were assaulted by military personnel over the weekend, RFE/RL’s Russian Service reports.
Valery Lazarev, an editor at the Volga TV company, told RFE/RL that the incident took place on July 23 when his crew was filming a fire at a military base in Nizhny Novgorod.
Lazarev said the officers demanded that the crew hand over the cassette with the footage of the fire, which it said it did after being threatened.
Andrei Bobrun, spokesman for the commander of the Western Military District in Nizhny Novgorod, told journalists that there was no fire at the military base in Nizhny Novgorod.
