After 13 years of laying the groundwork and two years of being built, the Nord Stream pipeline will flow its first Russian gas to an estimated 26 million households in the EU on this Tuesday. The Nord Stream pipeline, which passes under the Baltic Sea from Vyborg city in the Leningrad region of Russia, to Greifswald in Germany, will be unique in many ways. It is the longest undersea pipeline in the world – more than 1,200 miles – and will operate under the highest pressure permissible to modern times…
The pipeline capacity will have reached 1 million cubic meters per hour at 4 pm Moscow time, which calculates to an annual supply capacity of 8.5 million cubic meters. This should grow to 27.5 million cubic meters of gas a year and after the second line is launched in the autumn of 2012, deliveries will double to total of 55 billion cubic meters per year…
This was all necessary because Gazprom has forecast that the usage of gas in Europe would rise to 200 million cubic meters a year by 2030…
This pipeline opening today has caused a stifled squeak and squeal from two transit countries (Ukraine and Belarus) and they see transit money in the billions and billions of dollars being skirted around their countries now that Nord Stream is a fact. These countries were given the opportunity to correct their attitudes years ago and they chose to follow a path of self destruction…
This was a huge operation for Russia and Putin was a driving factor in this pipeline. He overcame many obstacles and now has helped secure energy stability in Europe. The days of Ukraine and Belarus holding Russia/Europe hostage with gas blockage are ending and that is just right…
But the final coup de grâce is the South Stream Project that will finish the need for troublesome transit countries.
