Serbia hold off Russia in Fed Cup semis

Russia have been knocked out in the semi-finals of the Fed Cup. Serbia secured a 3-2 win in Moscow to reach the final for the first time in their history.

The tie was level at one apiece heading into Sunday’s final day of action. Things looked to be going the hosts’ way when Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova took the first set against Ana Ivanovic. However the Serb rallied to win 10 consecutive games taking the match 3-6, 6-0, 6-3.

It meant Svetlana Kuznetsova knew she needed a win over former World Number 1 Jelana Jankovic, but went down comprehensively in straight sets 6-1, 6-4.

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Elena Vesnina sugared the pill for the Russian fans by beating Aleksandra Krunic and Bojana Jovanovski  in the doubles in straight sets, but it was too little too late.

The Serbs will now try to stop the reigning champions the Czech Republic, who secured the remaining berth in the final, seeing off Italy 3-1.
