Storm Warning in Russia’s Far East as Typhoon Nears

A storm warning was issued on Monday in Russia’s Maritime Territory as Typhoon Bolaven is approaching the region, the Emergencies Ministry said.

The severe typhoon is expected to reach the Korean Peninsula on Tuesday evening. Bolaven had wind strength of 252 kilometers per hour when it hit Okinawa, Japan, on Sunday night, which put it in the “super typhoon” category.

The ministry said heavy rains and high winds should be expected along the coast August 28-29.

Rescue services advised the residents to postpone outings, hunting or fishing expeditions.

Five people were injured in Okinawa and about 550 people had to evacuate in the wake of the typhoon. About 17,500 households in Okinawa and 58,300 homes in Kagoshima lost electricity as the storm damaged power lines.
