Over 20 Su-33 aircraft have been deployed on the Northern Fleet’s Admiral Kuznetsov heavy aircraft carrier in Murmansk. These deck-based planes, derivatives of the Su-27, make up the core of Russia’s naval aviation.
The planes have been specially upgraded to operate from aircraft carriers. A Su-33’s engines have increased thrust that allows a short take-off run on the deck.
