Tennis queen Wozniacki leaves Miami courts

Andrea Petkovic has posted probably the biggest win of her career so far, eliminating the world’s top tennis player Caroline Wozniacki in the fourth round of the Sony Ericsson Open.

The German, ranked 23rd, produced some powerful shots early on. With the Dane serving for the first set, Petkovic saved the matchpoint in style, denying Wozniacki with a backhand winner down the line. She went on to win it 7-5.

Wozniaki raised her game and clinched the second 6-3. But too many errors followed in the third, allowing Petkovic to take control as the German took the decider and the match by 6 games to 3. She set up a meeting with Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic.

It was a good day for Maria Sharapova as well. The Russian progressed into the last eight without any trouble, beating the fourth seed Australian Samantha Stosur in what was her first win over a top-five ranked player. Next up for Maria is Alexandra Dulgheru, who knocked out Peng Shuai.

In the men’s event, Roger Federer was a straight sets winner on Monday seeing off Juan Monaco.

The two-time Miami champion secured a 7-6, 6-4 victory and will take on Olivier Rochus next after the Belgian defeated the only Russian left in the men’s draw, Mikhail Youznhy – 1-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Elsewhere, Rafael Nadal and Tomas Berdych are also through to the last eight.
