Three Russian police officers jailed for stealing $1.1 million

Three Russian police officers have been sentenced to up to 7 years and nine months in prison for stealing 31 million rubles ($1.1 million) from men traveling to Moscow from southern Russia.

Two men arrived at Vnukovo Airport outside of Moscow from the North Caucasus republic of Dagestan in September 2008 carrying 15 bags with ruble, dollar and euro banknotes, worth some $14 million.

Transport police officers Alexander Adamov, Igor Voronov and Sergei Chechel detained the two men and stole about 23.2 million rubles ($848,000) from them, forging documents to cover up the crime.

The three officers stole another 8 million rubles ($292,500) from a passenger and a flight attendant of Dagestan Airlines two days later.

They were charged with large-scale theft, abuse of office and document forgery.

Another police officer, Marat Yunusov, plea bargained and was sentenced to three years, nine months in prison in February 2010.
