Top police officer killed in Russia’s Dagestan

A senior Russian police officer was killed in an attack in the North Caucasus republic of Dagestan on Thursday, police say.

Police say regional deputy riot police chief Shamil Murtuzaliyev was gunned down by unknown assailants in the region’s capital, Makhachkala, at noon.

Dagestan has been troubled by Islamist militancy that has spread from neighboring Chechnya, which has seen two brutal separatist wars in the past two decades.
