Tsunami waves of one to three metres have hit Russia’s Kuril Islands . A nine minutes’ notice allowed all 11 thousand or so people in the danger zone to move inland. There were neither casualties nor damage from the water surges. The Kurils have an automated tsunami alert system installed in 2004 on instruction from the Russian President.
