US denies it has offered offshore drilling deal to BP

The US has said there is no deal with BP on re-starting offshore drilling.

Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar has denied reports of an agreement with BP, which was supposedly to allow the energy giant to resume drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.

Ken Salazar has said BP would first need to go through a stringent set of standards as set for other oil drilling companies.

Media reports at the weekend said that BP had struck an agreement to restart several projects stalled by last year’s Gulf of Mexico spill.

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico flowed for three months in 2010.

It was the largest accidental marine oil spill in the history of the oil industry.
