Yemeni president dismisses government

Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh dismissed on Sunday the government of Prime Minister Ali Mujawar, SABA Yemeni news agency reported.

The president pledged to put a new constitution to a referendum this year and create a parliamentary system in the country, world media reported Thursday.

The opposition subsequently rejected the offer. The opposition demands the president to step down. Saleh has refused to quit, but promised he will not run for another presidential term.

Yemen has been hit by the wave of unrest that has swept through the Arab world, toppling authoritarian regimes in Tunisia and Egypt and stoking mass popular uprisings in Libya and Bahrain.
