Anya Titova will represent Russia at The 54th International Art Exhibition within this year’s Art Biennale in Venice. She is the only Russian among the 82 participants of the main project.
Born in Sverdlovsk (now Ekaterinburg) in 1984, the young artist graduated from Glasgow Academy with a degree in photography, studied at the Moscow Institute of Contemporary Art and worked as a photoeditor with the Russian Afisha magazine.
Her works have been displayed at several exhibitions of the Moscow Biennale of Young Art and within one of the Fashion and Style in Photography festivals, which is underway in the capital now. She also had her personal exhibitions in Copenhagen in 2006 and in Moscow in 2008, scoring warm appreciation from the professional art community.
The 54th International Art Exhibition, directed by Bice Curiger, will run in Venice from June 4 through November 27, 2011. The show is titled ILLUMInations, and will be set up in the Central Pavilion at Giardini and at the Arsenale, forming a single itinerary that will feature 82 artists from all over the world, including 32 young artists born after 1975, as well as 32 women.
The Russian pavilion this year was given to the country’s pioneers of Conceptual Art Andrey Monastyrsky and Collective Actions art groupe. The project is titled Empty Zones. The curator of the Russian pavilion is art historian and critic Boris Groys.
