Scores have been killed in a triple suicide bomber attack and a shooting which hit Afghanistan on Thursday. There is little hope the Afghan military can maintain peace by itself after NATO withdraws, former CIA officer Michael Scheuer told RT.
“The Afghan national police force are never going to be able to control the country, not just because they have not been trained sufficiently, but also because they are divided tribally,” he said. “When we are gone, when NATO leaves, they will all go back to their tribes and they will fight each other again.”
“The whole house of cards will come down after the United States and its allies complete their withdrawal, withdrawal in defeat really,” Scheuer added.
According to him, after ten years of fighting, the US is seeing no measure of progress against the enemy in Afghanistan.
“We went there with one mission, which was to destroy the Taliban and to destroy al- Qaeda,” Scheuer said. “Quite frankly we have not killed enough of the enemy and their supporters to make any difference. We, instead, tried to build a Western democracy in a country that is conservatively Islamic and deeply Islamic.”
The attacks and subsequent shooting, which occurred in Afghanistan’s Uruzgan province, have killed at least 19 people and injured another 37, AFP news agency reports.
The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack, which involved three suicide bombers blowing themselves up simultaneously in a government compound in the town of Trinkot, followed by a gunfight in the market.
The attacks come as NATO allies are preparing to withdraw thousands of their troops from Afghanistan. All foreign combat forces are scheduled to leave Afghanistan by the end of 2014.
