The consultative Shura Council has advised the Saudi government to allow women to vote in municipal elections under Islamic law, Arab media reported on Tuesday.
Shura Council Secretary General Muhammad Al-Ghamdi said the allowance should only be exercised by women in line with Islamic regulations, Arabnews.com reported.
In the upcoming municipal elections, women are not allowed either to vote or to contest the polls.
Saudi women are also banned from driving and cannot travel without being authorized by a male guardian. When in public, they have to cover their bodies from head to toe.
