Raped Libyan woman to be allowed to tell her story

A Libyan woman who was taken away after tearfully telling journalists about a rape incident, will be allowed to speak to reporters again.

Eman al-Obeidy has been told she can speak to two or three female journalists this week to tell of her allegations against Gaddafi troops.

But CNN has reported that al-Obeidy’s mother, Aisha Ahmad, has still has not heard from her daughter.

She said she was concerned the government would portray her daughter in a negative light.

On Saturday Ms al-Obeidy, a 29-year-old law school graduate, burst into the Rixos Hotel where she confronted foreign journalists.

She showed reporters blood on her right inner thigh and was observed to have bruising to the face and legs.

She also displayed what appeared to be rope burns on her wrists and ankles.

She said she had been held against her will for two days and raped by 15 men from Gaddafi’s brigades.

But government security men attempted to quieten her and eventually wrested her away from the journalists.

As she was telling her story some members of the hotel’s kitchen staff yelled that she was a “traitor.”

The Libyan government later said al-Obeidy had been drunk or mentally ill.

Officials called her a prostitute and allowed the alleged perpetrators to file a counter-claim against her for slander.
