A Just Russia pushes for St. Petersburg governor’s resignation

A Just Russia will keep pressing for the resignation of St. Petersburg Governor Valentina Matviyenko, as well as Education Minister Andrei Fursenko, pro-Kremlin party leader Sergei Mironov said on Monday.

The St. Petersburg Legislative Assembly voted last Wednesday to recall Mironov from the Federation Council following his denunciation of Matviyenko and the ruling United Russia party, which dominates national and regional legislatures.

“The most important task is to ensure that [Matviyenko] does not head our city anymore,” Mironov said.

“She lost the moral right to run St. Petersburg a long time ago.”

The party should unseat her in the December parliamentary election and then nominate its own candidate, he said.

There has been no response from Matviyenko yet.

A Just Russia will also urge the country’s leadership to dismiss Fursenko as science and education minister, Mironov said.

“The Science and Education Ministry is destroying universal, free and accessible education,” he said.

Two separate ministries need to be established, he added – one responsible for education and the other for science.

Fursenko responded by saying he would not resign.
