SUKHUMI, August 14 (Itar-Tass) —— Abkhazia observes the Day of Remembrance of Fatherland Defenders. Georgian forces invaded Abkhazia and a war began on August 14, 1992.
Government members, parliament deputies, representatives of the public and young people brought flowers to the Glory Memorial in Sukhumi on Sunday.
The Georgian-Abkhaz war lasted for 413 days. More than 12,000 servicemen fought for Abkhazia. Over 2,700 people died and more than 5,000 were injured. About 200 were announced missing.
Volunteers from the North Caucasus, South Russia and Abkhaz communities abroad fought for independence of Abkhazia together with local residents.
