Afghan President Karzai to pay official visit to Turkmenistan

President of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai begins on Saturday his two-day official visit to Turkmenistan, the country’s foreign ministry said.

Experts believe that Karzai will discuss with his Turkmenistan colleague Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov the current situation in Afghanistan and the implementation of the TAPI gas pipeline construction.

The presidents are expected to sign a number of documents on cooperation in energy, transportation and trade sectors.

The pipeline project participants Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India, signed a final agreement in December 2010 to build the TAPI gas pipeline to pump gas to India from Central Asian states.

The 1,700 kilometer pipeline with an annual flow capacity of 30 billion cubic meters and a rough cost of $4 billion, which was stalled by the war in Afghanistan, is supported by the Asian Bank for Development.
