Authorities Fly in Food to Stranded Kamchatka Village

Authorities in Russia’s far eastern Kamhactka region are flying in a plane with food aid to to save a remote community which has been stranded by ice, a local official said on Tuesday.

Ships have been unable to reach the Olyutorsky district because of a “difficult ice situation” in the Karaginsky Gulf and Korfa Bay, Kamchatka special programs minister Sergei Khabarov told RIA Novosti.

One Antonov An-26 aircraft has already delivered food to the ailing villages, but they are still facing severe flour shorages, Khabarov said.

Another plane, which is expected to fly soon, will deliver 4.5 tons of flour, he said.
