Bahrain has declared a three-month state of emergency following weeks of protests by the Shiite Muslim majority against the ruling Sunni elite.
The state of emergency was ordered by King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa as an “act of national safety”, the local television reports.
A troop contingent of the Gulf Cooperation Council has been brought in. On Tuesday, one soldier was killed by a gun shot fired from a crowd of protesters in the capital Manama.
