BP will re-start Gulf of Mexico drilling program

BP is going to resume deepwater drilling in the Gulf of Mexico according to the UK newspaper, The Sunday Times.

The Times reported that BP would resume drilling by July, once it satisfied the regulatory conditions set out by the US offshore regulator.

The company’s chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg last month said the oil spill in 2010 that had been sparked by an explosion on a BP-leased platform was no reason to cease deep sea drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.

The incident killed 11 workers and sent nearly five million barrels of oil surging into the Gulf

The spill was the largest ever man-made environmental disaster in the United States.

A moratorium on deepwater drilling in the Gulf of Mexico was lifted in October.
