Bulgaria, Russia officially freeze construction of nuclear power plant for 3 months


Bulgaria and Russia have signed a memorandum to stop construction of the Belene nuclear power plant for three months, Bulgaria’s National Electric Company (NEK) said here on Tuesday.According to the memorandum, signed on Tuesday by the NEK and the Russian company Atomstroyexport, any new construction activities at Belene NPP and production of new equipment for this NPP, should be suspended by the end of June.Meanwhile, the two companies would make every effort to perform detailed analysis of the issues related to the nuclear and radiation safety of Belene NPP, NEK said.The 2,000-megawatt-plant was approved in 2005.
