Chechen boys born on ex-president’s birthday get cash gifts

The families of Chechen boys born on the 60th birthday of the republic’s late president Akhmat Kadyrov have received 50,000 rubles ($1,700), Chechnya’s health minister said on Thursday.

Akhmat Kadryov, the father of Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, was born on August 23 1951. He was killed in a bomb attack in Grozny in 2004.

Health Minister Shakhid Akhmadov said of the 71 boys born this August 23, over 40 had been named Akhmat. Sixteen more were named Ramzan.

The Akhmat Kadyrov Charity allocated the funds for the gifts.

A former separatist, Akhmat Kadyrov switched sides at the start of the Second Chechen War. His son, Ramzan, has been accused of encouraging a cult of personality in Chechnya and complicity in human rights abuses. He denies the charges.
