A Moscow court on Friday sentenced Aslan Cherkesov to 20 years in jail for murdering Moscow Spartak fan Yegor Sviridov.
Cherkesov, from the North Caucasus Kabardino-Balkaria republic, shot Sviridov dead in a brawl last December. The death triggered nationalist riots throughout Russia. President Dmitry Medvedev appealed for ethnic calm after some 5,000 ultranationalist and football fans gathered by the walls of the Kremlin to protest.
Cherkesov’s lawyer said he would appeal the verdict.
The Moscow City Court also sentenced five other men to five years in jail each for taking part in the fight.
Two more men from Russia’s North Caucasus region were convicted earlier this week of killing another Spartak fan, Yury Volkov.
