Cuban president proposes to introduce term limits for state officials

Office terms of high-ranking officials in Cuba should be limited to 10 years, Cuban President Raul Castro told the 6th Communist Party Congress which opened in Havana on Saturday.

“We made a conclusion that it would be advisable to limit time of service for political and state positions to two consecutive five-year terms,” Castro said at the opening of the Party’s Congress.

He said that by placing limits on the office terms the country would secure an inflow of new blood in the government.

The three-day Congress, viewed by many experts as crucial for the further social and economic development of Cuba, involves 1,000 delegates from all over the country.

Cuba held its previous Communist Party Congress 14 years ago, while the first one was held in 1975.
