TBILISI, August 27 (Itar-Tass) — Any decision on the fate of the Abkhazian region without the participation of displaced persons is illegal, the Georgian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Saturday.
According to the statement, “as a result of the armed conflict of 1992-1993 about 500,000 residents of the Abkhazian region – Georgians, Ukrainians, Armenians, Greeks, Estonians and others – became refugees and deprived of the right to return to their homes and take part in decision-making.”
The ministry says, “Due to the existing realities the elections in the Abkhazian region violates all norms of international law and cannot be considered legitimate.”
Tbilisi is convinced that the international community “will give an adequate assessment to a farce in the Abkhazian region pursue the non-recognition policy”, the ministry said.
