Fire put out at a substation near Moscow

Fire was extinguished at a thermal power plant substation in the city of Mytishchi northeast of the Russian capital, a spokesman for Moscow Region emergencies service said on Wednesday.

The alert about fire was received at 7:20 Moscow time (3:20 GMT), and nine firefighting units were sent to the building, where about 25 metric tons of fuel were stored.

“The fire was put out completely at 8:09 Moscow time [4:09 GMT],” the source said.

In May 2005 an accident at the Chagino substation outside Moscow affected Moscow and much of the surrounding region. The power outage left more than 150 hospitals without electricity and caused major disruptions to commuter traffic. About 4 million residents of the Moscow Region were affected.
