MAGAS (Ingushetia), June 10 (RIA Novosti) – Five police officers and a 19-year-old civilian were injured late on Saturday by a grenade blast near the capital of the Russian North Caucasus Republic of Ingushetia, a source at the regional investigation committee said.
“Close to midnight, unidentified assailants fired a grenade, possibly from an underbarrel grenade launcher, at a group of policemen patrolling the site of festivities on the Kavkaz federal highway near the capital,” the official said.
“All injured have been hospitalized but, according to doctors, their lives are not in danger,” he added.
The search for attackers is underway.
Ingushetia, one of Russia’s poorest and most restive regions, celebrates the 20th anniversary of its establishment in 1992 after the Chechen-Ingush Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was split in two.
The region remains a site of a long-running battle between local Islamist militants and federal security forces for control of the republic and the wider North Caucasus.
