The recent fuel meltdown in the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant’s second reactor was provisional in character, says Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano.
According to him, this may have been the cause of water contamination in the second reactor, with radiation levels exceeding normal by 100,000 times now.
The drained radioactive water may result in a large-scale contamination of an area around the station, as well as the nearby sea area.
According to Japan’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, sea water radiation levels in the immediate vicinity of the station are already 1,150 times above normal.
