Russia’s presidential envoy to Africa Mikhail Margelov said on Wednesday that toppled Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was hiding somewhere in Libya.
“I personally think that he is on Libyan territory, but time will show where he will move in the future,” Margelov said on the sidelines of the Global Policy Forum in Yaroslavl, 300 kilometers northeast of Moscow.
Margelov said Russia was in active talks with the new Libyan government officials.
“The Libyan oil and energy minister is coming to Moscow in the near future and we will talk to the Libyan delegates at a UN General Assembly meeting in mid-September,” Margelov said.
Russia is seeking to establish a dialogue with the new Libyan government, which ousted Gaddafi with NATO’s help during six months of armed confrontation. Russia, which had strong ties with Gaddafi, did not recognize the legitimacy of the new Libyan government until recently.
