MAGAS, Russia — Opposition activist Magomed Khazbiyev was beaten and detained today in the volatile Russian republic of Ingushetia, RFE/RL’s Russian Service reports.
Khazbiyev’s wife, Leila Khazbiyeva, told RFE/RL that armed, masked men in uniforms entered their house, beat her husband and his two brothers, and took them away.
She said the incident took place immediately after her husband returned from a protest against the recent abduction of activists in Nazran, the republic’s largest city.
Ingushetian Interior Ministry representatives told RFE/RL that Khazbiyev was not abducted but detained for “organizing unsanctioned public actions and disorder.”
