Newly-elected International Olympics Committee executive board member Anita Defrantz has said that she has faith in the Russian government when they say they will drop their anti-gay laws during the Sochi Olympics.

According to the New Civil Rights Movement website, Defrantz expressed that Russia had assured the IOC that all of where the Games will be held, the law will not come into effect.

The International Association of Athletics Federations has urged Russia to reconsider its views on gay rights in the recent past.

Russia’s sports minister, however, did insist in the past that athletes would have to respect the laws of the country during the Feb 7-23 games in the Black Sea resort in southern Russia. (ANI)
